Group money-splitting glossary

The concepts you meet when splitting money with a group, explained in plain words. Same language as the Chitipay app and the splitting tool.

Splitting group expenses

Dividing one or more shared expenses among members, then working out who ends up owing whom.

Member

Someone taking part in a split. On the web it's just a name — no account needed.

Expense

One shared cost: who paid, who shares it, the amount, and how it's split.

Payer (who fronted the money)

The member who paid up front for an expense and gets reimbursed their share by the others.

Split evenly vs by amount

Evenly: everyone carries an equal share. By amount: each person carries exactly what they used.

Balance

Paid minus owed for each person. Positive means they should get money back, negative means they still owe, zero means settled.

Settling up

The set of transfers that brings every balance to zero — who needs to pay whom after the whole trip or month.

Direct settlement

People who owe pay creditors directly, with no middleman.

Collector settlement

Route everything through one person (the collector): debtors pay the collector, the collector pays the creditors. Handy for big groups.
